Why You (the Middle Schooler) Should Protect the Enviroment
By Mackenzie Krestul
Human kind has only one planet that is inhabitable, Earth. Earth is the only planet with the atmosphere that will hold the gases needed for breathing, and for survival. Many other planets’ atmospheres hold poisonous air. Humans should be thankful that Earth’s doesn’t. Or does it? The average American releases more than 27 tons of pollution into the atmosphere every year. And that’s only a single individual. That is what is breathed by people every day, and it creates and worsens cases of lung diseases including asthma, emphysema, and lung cancer. The corrupted air poses a threat to everyone. This is the one and only earth in the universe. When you grow up, you will inherit this planet no matter its condition. It’s your home. Will you let it be destroyed by the carelessness of your species, and yourself? It is vital that everyone, especially children and high-schoolers, participate in cleaning the earth.
All climates around the world are perfect for the creatures and crops that live there. These balances can be, and are being, disrupted because of excess burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels release greenhouse gases, which trap heat in our atmosphere. So unless you are prepared to work to reduce your carbon footprint, you can kiss the weather that you love goodbye. And if you love going to the beach, be aware that the sea levels are rising to swallow the sand due to climate change pollution. What can you do to stop this? There are incredibly simple ways to save the planet that is your home. One way is to make it a habit to turn off lights and appliances when you leave a room. Also, it is incredibly important to reduce, reuse, and RECYCLE. You can conserve energy and reduce the emissions created during production by doing so. Also, carpooling and walking to places when you can are great ways to reduce the amount of gas you are responsible for burning. Can you see how simple it is to make a difference? Help yourself to grow up in a better place, and to have a cleaner, healthier planet to leave to you own family.
Every year, 14 billion pounds of trash are dumped into the ocean, poisoning marine life. Did you know that there is an area of trash floating in the ocean that is the size of Texas called the trash vortex? All of this garbage mostly consists of plastic, which breaks down at an incredibly slow rate. Why does this matter? Not only is it unfair that human kind’s disconcern for other species is taking the innocent lives of marine life, it also means that one of the major food supplies, fish, is poisoned. It’s a very serious problem, and one that should be addressed immediately. In any case of the environment, there are always lots of kids and teens that want to help, but don’t know how they can. It’s the feeling of, “I’m only one person, what can I do?” It comes back again to the simple things. For instance, whenever you are at the grocery store, you or your parent should always use reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags. And any items that are recyclable SHOULD BE RECYCLED. Too much space in landfills is taken up by recyclable items. It is a massive waste of energy and destroys the environment. Conserve and help the world by reducing the amount of trash in the ocean and in landfills.
When you grow up and inherit this earth, what kind of place do you want it to be? An uninhabitable realm covered in trash? No. Nature cannot blossom unless humanity cleans up its act. There are billions of species of creatures that share the earth, and it is not just of humans to destroy the habitats of these creatures as well. If everyone just started with simple acts in everyday life that help clean the earth, it would be a better place. An excess of greenhouse gases is warming the earth, and the careless dumping of trash is destroying the marine ecosystems of the world. If the world does nothing, the problems will only continue to escalate until it is too late to stop them. The world needs to appreciate the gift of a perfectly habitable planet that exists nowhere else. The best way to show appreciation for something is to take care of it. Do your part, clean the earth, and save your home.
